The Community First Advanced Health Care Planning Initiative was initiated at the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin on June 27, 2015. The presentation was by Amy Hamane and Steve Yamami. Approximately fourteen people participated. Technical support was also provided by Hospice of Hilo. The participants posed many questions which helped to form the changes/improvements made to the presentation. A follow-up session was held two weeks later to evaluate the presentation. Again, several insightful comments were made by the participants which resulted in changes to the presentation.
On November 22, 2015, a presentation was made by Charlene Iboshi to the members of the temple at the morning service. She discussed the rising "Silver Tsunami" as baby boomers continue to live longer, healthier lives. She spoke about the importance of families discussing end-of-life health care and the economic pressures that will be placed on the medical system.
A talk story session followed. Chris Ridley, Tony Kent and Amy Hamane were present to answer questions from the temple members. Future events with additional temple groups will be held to continue the educational efforts.
